Video Marketing For Small Business A picture is worth a thousand words. A video is worth a thousand pictures. If you were presented 'Product A' accompanied by a fact sheet and 'Product B' accompanied by a video with someone describing the product features (assuming the person was well spoken); all else being equal, which would you purchase? I'd venture to say most likely 'Product B'. It's a face to a product. A real, live human being. Video marketing puts a face to a company. Your customers will learn more about you in 10 seconds of video than in 10 pages of text describing your product/company. For small businesses and local businesses, video marketing can be an especially effective tool. Videos can establish your personality and how you want your brand to be viewed; which is important when dealing with a localized market base. It's the same concept as the owner of used car dealership or a mattress company yelling and screaming sales pitches at you during the commercial break of your local news - they want you to like them and thus by association, like their product. Think of video marketing as a communication tool that allows you engage with customers on a more personal level. That's why video marketing is an extremely powerful tool. Many company websites are full of text, long paragraphs, and product descriptions… if I felt like reading giant blocks of text I'd pick up a book. Those same companies can create succinct, professional videos that serve a multitude of marketing purposes while keeping text to a minimum. It's all about finding the most efficient, effective, and easily sharable way to transmit information to the consumer. Videos can make using keywords easier and increase your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) easier because it gives you a map of exactly the keywords you need to use in the title, website text, and descriptive text. If your video highlights a new product be sure to use the product name as well as any other details and keywords that are used in the video to maximize your videos search-ability. If you post your videos to YouTube you can utilize the 'tagging' box by imputing the keywords that relate to your video. Whether you are using YouTube or embedding a video on your company site, it's important to use as many keywords as possible. More keywords/tags = easier to find. Videos also help increase SEO across Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines by showing up in the 'video' search fields. Web sites with videos usually get indexed faster and more traffic than those without videos. Having multimedia content on your website allows you to maximize exposure not only through standard searches, but video and image searches as well. Branding your videos is extremely important. You can put up the greatest video in the world, but if people don't know who made it then it doesn't help promote your business. There are many ways to brand your videos. Many companies begin each video with a logo graphic, sometimes accompanied by trademark music/audio and conclude each video with a website link or call to action. Another way to brand your video is by having a company watermark in the video screen corner throughout the video. Whichever branding method you choose be sure to keep it consistent. This will make your videos instantly recognizable and familiar to customers. Video marketing can serve a multitude of purposes. A video can provide information about your company, its services, its employees, or a product launch. A video can be a candid behind the scenes look at your company. Videos can be used to promote a product launch or a contest. You can also use videos to establish yourself as an expert in your field by giving a brief lesson that's helpful to your target market. You can also highlight customers using your product or providing testimonials. The most important thing is that you provide valuable content. The same principals apply to video marketing that apply to social media marketing. If your video isn't providing some kind of a value to the viewer then it's time to rethink it. A bad video can be extremely damaging to a company for the same reasons it can be beneficial - easy to share, branded, etc. A recent study by Tubemogel found that after two minutes 76.29% of viewers are no longer watching. That means 3 out of 4 people have lost interest, found something better to do: tweet, check Facebook, play with the cat, eat cereal… whatever. The point is: the shorter the better… in most cases. There are always exceptions; for example, if you are interviewing someone, giving a lengthy (and hopefully valuable) lesson, etc. But for the most part, your videos should be succinct and to-the-point. Keep it short. If you don't believe me then go to YouTube and search the title of one of your favorite movies followed by 'part 1'. Chances are it's on YouTube, and chances are the numbers of viewers steadily decreases from 'part 1' all the way to 'part 10' or 'part 12' or wherever it ends. You get the idea. In addition to using video to highlight blog posts, embed in your company website, and share on YouTube, Facebook is a great tool to share videos as well. Post videos on your company Facebook Page and provide a link back to your website or blog. You can also use Facebook 'likes' and 'comment' feeds on your company page to cross-promote video content. Videos are easy to share on Facebook and a great way to add a little multimedia 'bang' to your posts. The entire concept of Facebook is based around a picture of your face. It's based around multimedia, not text. Videos are an extension of pictures. Again, be consistent with your videos. Post once a week. Or once a month. Or once a day! Just don't have a Facebook Page with one video from 2009. Video marketing should be integrated into the marketing mix for all small businesses. It can drive traffic to your site, increase SEO, go viral, and engage customers on a more personal level. Do you have a video marketing requirement?
